New Year of the OX, New Moon in Aquarius

I celebrate three New Year Days. the first is on the winter solstice, December 21st when the darkest night starts its turn into the longer days. The second celebration is the traditional January 1st when the western calendar declares we have a new year. And the third is the Chinese New Year celebrated when the Sun and Moon are first aligned after the winter Solstice.

I always do an I Ching reading for the coming year, asking “What will most characterize the coming year for me?” Of course a lot always happens that I can’t foresee so the reading I get is usually not clear to me when I ask the question. But in the many years that I have been doing this, when I review my solstice reading at the end of the year the Hexagram, or both if I get changing lines, usually seem very appropriate for what unraveled during the year. An example for an easy interpretation is  the year I got divorced the Hexagram I received for that year was number 23, Splitting Apart. While the question is a very broad one and can’t possibly take in all the complexities of life,  I can’t resist asking. And as I said, I ask what MOST characterizes the year for me.

In the Chinese calendar, this is the year 4706, the Year of the Ox. Some other birth years for people born in the year of the Ox are: 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, and 1997. The next will be in 2021.

OX: A born leader, you inspire confidence from all around you. You are conservative methodical, and good with your hands. Guard against being chauvinistic and always demanding your own way.

Ranked as the second zodiac, the ox has a large volume. In the life, people often used the ox to indicate something big or large in number. The ox is sedulous, simple, honest, and straightforward. Fractious people are said to have an ‘oxen temper’.

People born in this year are probably honest, laborious, patient, obstinate, and poor at communication. Leaders in their career may not discover their abilities. In their old age, they would be bestowed with happiness. Women are usually good wives who pay attention to children’s education, but are likely to believe others’ cajolery, so should be cautious.

The time of a new moon, when sun and moon are in the same degree, is considered a time for new beginnings. Today is the big Eclipse, which features seven planets tightly aligned within a 30 degree range.  Mercury (mind) has just conjoined Mars (war) in the practical sign of Capricorn, and there is a strong focus on doing that which is necessary to achieve one’s goals.

There are five planets in Aquarius, the sign of social justice and innovation, making this an incredible time to embrace change and “newness.”  The New Moon includes a conjunction to Jupiter, which makes this a beneficial time for new beginnings.  There is a strong desire now to break free from any restrictions that are binding us and keeping us from breaking old patterns and making a fresh start.
