Chris,
I am assuming you re referring to Hexagram 60, "Limitation" - line 3. I don't know what interpretation you are reading. In the Wilhelm version he says, "He who knows no limitation will have cause to lament." I think (not knowing your reference) that the advice to "own reality" could apply to this interpretation although it is a bit more abstract. In my own, "I Ching Prescriptions" I suggested, for line 3, "Be aware of your own limits and work within those parameters. If you misjudge these limitations don't blame anyone else on what happens." That could be "owning reality."

Does this help? Are we talking about the same thing?

Thanks for posting,

Thanks for your comment Michelle -

First: About using the yarrow stalks - I used to use that method but when I learned that the odds for receiving a yang or a yin line are not equal I decided to go back to the coin method. I enjoyed the meditative quality when using the stalks, but prefer there being an equal chance of yin to yang. Although I am told the yarrow stalks were the original method and some people prefer it for that reason.

As for throwing the coins for a female - I would definitely stick with the method of moving from bottom to top. This is the way the Chinese write in general, not just for the I Ching. There is a logic to it if you think about it. I have a suggestion for you just for the heck of trying it out. Write your lines both ways as an experiment and see if you learning anything. I always say, the I Ching is free. Enjoy it. Have fun with it.

Hello,
I have only recently begun consulting the I Ching for wisdom and insight.
My question is about throwing the coins (I found the yarrow oracle to be too time consuming). Is there a difference of building the hexagram for a female. I believe traditionally that the hexagrams are built in ascending order (from the bottom up). I wondered that since instructions for throwing and building the hexagrams is masculine based if you have given any thought to whether or not the trigrams/hexagrams would be built differently for the feminine thrower? As in a descending order (from the top down), given the yin or opposite nature of the feminine from that of the yang/masculine nature?
Much thanks for your insight and consideration,
Michelle Hart

Hello Zana,

Thanks for posting. I'm afraid I don't understand your question. Perhaps you are leaving something out. You said that the six lines add up to a hexagram but it doesn't match the visual. This doesn't make sense. Can you be more specific in your process. The throwing of the coins and then writing down the line you get is a straight forward process. Where, how does it not match?

Hoping to be of help - Adele

This is a question not a reply. Sorry.

looking for answer to the perplexing difference between I Ching numbers and visual hexagram, for example the six lines add up to a number that corresponds to a hexagram, but the visual hexagram does not match the numbers produced by the throws. The hexagram I got from my throws, adds up to 46, but no. 46 Sheng/Pushing Upward, looks totally different.

What piece of my understanding is missing?

Thanks so much.

Hi Victoria,

No, I haven't changed anything but am very behind on posting new images and new Hexagrams. I was working on my, "I Ching Record Book" which you can find on Amazon or PDF version here. I want to get back to the Hexagrams soon.

Thanks for asking.

Dear Adele, I barely understand this, this is the reading I got.... I tried it on a certain website.... I was asked to virtually toss coins for 6 times... and once I was done, this is everything that I had received.... Can we decipher anything at all from what we have on us right now?

......and again, thank you for being so prompt & for being so considerate.....

Much affection & Many Thanks,
Divya
