I Ching With All Changing Lines

I am excerpting some content from my book, I Ching Prescriptions (Choosing Change) to briefly describe the underlying premise of the book and why I was inspired to create it.

If you have been viewing this blog for a while you know that I have been working for a long time on my graphic interpretation, I Ching Meditations. This version is different from my Prescriptions which are direct and easy to use, just like taking a pill might be. During the process of creating images for I Ching Meditations I experience each hexagram as a whole, with the 6 lines as one continual organic process.

Creating an image for each line of a hexagram is a slow and meditative process. I have to live with the hexagram during this process and came to feel that it is as if I had asked the I Ching a question and received all changing lines. I absorb the meaning of each line as it relates to the hexagram as a whole in a different way than when I ask a question and then read only the lines that changed. This process of working with the I Ching led me to the idea of choosing a situation for I Ching guidance rather than to only rely on the synchronistic method. I have read a number of I Ching articles on how to use the I Ching where the writer says to read only the lines that are changing for guidance. So I’m proposing a concept here with a different approach that goes against the traditional directions for consulting the I Ching. I use both methods.

Choose Your Changes

When consulting the I Ching as a prescription, instead of asking a question in the traditional coin throwing approach, decide what issue in your life that you either want to deal with or are now involved in.
Look at the list of the 64 Prescriptions. Decide what prescription you need.
Look up the prescription distillation in the book and see how the advice applies to your life.
Each I Ching prescription has seven parts to it; the general meaning at the top and the six phases written from the bottom up.

I have created a chart of all the hexagrams and their opposites that shows what a hexagram transforms to if all the lines change.

Circular Chart of I Ching Hexagrams

Earlier this month at the request of Kim Gould, I posted a discussion about Hexagrams 63, After Completion and the issue of why did it come before Hexagram 64, Before Completion. I received a comment from Luis Andrade in which he said, “It can be argued ‘why then 64 isn’t the first hex in the sequence?’ Because 64, in a sense, represents primordial chaos. But it isn’t a linear concept. It is circular. When the wheel continues turning, it starts with the seeds of a new order in the form of Heaven and Earth hexagrams.”

Then when Luis said that he would love to see what I would create for a circular graphic I took his comment as a challenge and created such a diagram of the Hexagrams. Looking at them that way makes a lot of sense to my visual mind.

I remember seeing such a diagram somewhere on the Internet and thought I would find it. But I didn’t. So I’m posting the one I created. I turned in into a poster that can be bought at Zazzle in various sizes. If you click on the image here it will take you to the page where you see it more closely.

Cassini Spacecraft Discovered Hexagon Shape on Saturn’s North Pole

I Ching and Hexagons on Saturn

I have been sick with the flu since the beginning of the month and have not been able to post until now. I had been working on updating Hexagram Eleven – Peace, but when I began to get well I first checked on my favorite Astrology site, Astrodynamics by Lynn Hayes. She has posted an article and video about some of the findings of the Cassini space mission and the discovery of a gigantic hexagon shape on the north pole of Saturn. From time to time Lynn posts astronomy articles which I find of equal interest. Astrologers were, after all, the original astronomers. I am posting a different video, part 1 of the 4 part series by Richard C Hoagland, Hyperdimensional Hexagon in 4 parts. Hoagland is a former space science museum curator; a former NASA consultant, and during the historic Apollo Missions to the Moon, was science advisor to Walter Cronkite and CBS News. If you find this video as interesting as I did, you can click on the other three parts.

I enjoyed this remark by Hoagland about the Hexagon in the video, “The Hexagon is deep, nested like a Chinese puzzle box.” I can’t help but wonder about these hexagon and hexagram shapes and a connection to the I Ching.

“After waiting years for the sun to illuminate Saturn’s north pole again, cameras aboard NASA’s Cassini spacecraft have captured the most detailed images yet of the intriguing hexagon shape crowning the planet.

“The new images of the hexagon, whose shape is the path of a jet stream flowing around the north pole, reveal concentric circles, curlicues, walls and streamers not seen in previous images. Images and the three-frame animation are available at http://www.nasa.gov/cassini , http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov and http://ciclops.org .

“The last visible-light images of the entire hexagon were captured by NASA’s Voyager spacecraft nearly 30 years ago, the last time spring began on Saturn. After the sunlight faded, darkness shrouded the north pole for 15 years. Much to the delight and bafflement of Cassini scientists, the location and shape of the hexagon in the latest images match up with what they saw in the Voyager pictures.

“The longevity of the hexagon makes this something special, given that weather on Earth lasts on the order of weeks,” said Kunio Sayanagi, a Cassini imaging team associate at the California Institute of Technology. “It’s a mystery on par with the strange weather conditions that give rise to the long-lived Great Red Spot of Jupiter.”

“The hexagon was originally discovered in images taken by the Voyager spacecraft in the early 1980s. It encircles Saturn at about 77 degrees north latitude and has been estimated to have a diameter wider than two Earths. The jet stream is believed to whip along the hexagon at around 100 meters per second (220 miles per hour).

“Early hexagon images from Voyager and ground-based telescopes suffered from poor viewing perspectives. Cassini, which has been orbiting Saturn since 2004, has a better angle for viewing the north pole. But the long darkness of Saturnian winter hid the hexagon from Cassini’s visible-light cameras for years. Infrared instruments, however, were able to obtain images by using heat patterns. Those images showed the hexagon is nearly stationary and extends deep into the atmosphere. They also discovered a hotspot and cyclone in the same region.

I spent a lot of time immersed with all the information I found on this subject. I am an artist, not a scientist so my question to any viewer here, is what do you think about these hexagons on Saturn and apparently also on Jupiter in relation to the I Ching, if anything? In the realm of synchronicity don’t you find this amazing and relevant. But What?
